Choose Captains of Crush for closing a gripper, use owned dumbbells for supporting-grip work, choose a loading tool such as the IronMind Hub for pinch practice, and use finger-extension bands for opening the hand against resistance. One “grip strengthener” does not train all four tasks in the same way.

| Training task / exact tool | Adjustment and resistance method | Fit and components | Observed cost / skip condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crushing · Captains of Crush Guide | Fixed torsion spring; manufacturer rating 60 lb. Other strengths are separate grippers, not dial settings. | Two metal handles; no adjustable handle span. Checked manufacturer pages do not publish a numeric open span. | $34.95 for Guide. Skip if you cannot comfortably set and close this geometry; do not select by ego or another brand’s pound label. |
| Finger flexion · Prohands Gripmaster | Independent finger-button models: Green 1.5 lb, Yellow 3 lb, Blue 5 lb, Red 7 lb, Black 9 lb listed resistance. Separate fixed-tension models, not a dial. | Palm base and individual buttons; model/profile selection matters. Numeric hand span not established by the checked listing. | $21.95 listed; exact-model availability requires confirmation because the page also shows a backorder notice. Skip for a bar hold or pinch lift. |
| Pinch · IronMind Hub | Plate-loaded; progression comes from the actual hanging mass and setup. | 2⅞ in diameter gripping surface. Hub separate from compatible loading pin, clip/connector and plates. | $36.95 Hub only. Skip when you lack suitable loading components or the goal is closing a gripper. |
| Finger extension · Expand-Your-Hand Bands | Five color-coded resistance levels; no directly comparable pound scale published. | Ten latex-free bands, two per level; expands fingers outward. | $14.95 set. Skip as a substitute for supporting heavy dumbbells. |
| Supporting · owned suitable dumbbells | Load and hold duration adjusted separately; record load per hand. | Use the normal handles with a clear set-down area. No additional grip attachment required. | $0 incremental cost if owned. Skip maximal holds when grip fatigue would compromise your main session. |
Crushing grip: start with a gripper you can actually train
Captains of Crush offers separate fixed-strength grippers. Guide's published 60 lb is part of IronMind's own scale, not a promise that it feels like another brand's “60 lb” device. Its FAQ explicitly explains that the company's ratings describe relative difficulty within the family and should not be treated as a universal comparison.
A useful starting model allows controlled complete closes rather than only partial movement. Check that you can place it comfortably in the hand without wrapping fingers around the spring. If you need an adjustable device, verify both resistance settings and handle-span adjustment: a resistance dial does not necessarily change how wide the handles start.

| Adjustable option | Published hand fit | Resistance/price limit |
|---|---|---|
| Robert Baraban Adjustable Handgripper black textured | Manufacturer lists 73–78 mm grip separation; knurled palm handle and anatomical finger handle. | Adjustable spring device. The checked page does not publish a calibrated setting-to-load table. Displayed US$154.70 including 20% tax, excluding shipping; five in stock. Obtain a US delivered quote. |
Robert Baraban manufacturer specifications support the quoted span and listing price. Skip this premium adjustable option if a simpler fixed model meets your plan; do not assume its settings match another brand’s pound scale.

Supporting grip: train the task you care about
If dumbbells slip during carries or a bar hold ends early, squeezing a small spring gripper is only an indirect task match. Practice with suitable existing handles and a manageable load, keeping an easy, clear set-down. Record whether the number is per hand or combined. A 40 lb dumbbell in each hand is an 80 lb combined load but a 40 lb load held by each hand.
Use our farmer-carry guide for loading and space and pull-up-bar workouts for station-appropriate progressions. Do not add hanging work to an unsupported doorway structure or train to grip failure above an unsafe landing.
Pinch grip: quote the whole loading chain
The IronMind Hub provides a 2⅞-inch gripping surface that the fingers and thumb pinch from above. It does not come with a stack of usable resistance. You also need the compatible loading pin, clip/connector and plates specified for the setup.
Keep the lift close to the floor and clear of feet, and set down under control. The manufacturer’s $36.95 Hub price is an attachment-only amount; quote the rest of the loading chain before calling it a complete purchase. Do not compare a 30 lb Hub lift directly with a 30 lb gripper label or a 30 lb dumbbell hold.
Finger flexion versus finger extension
Gripmaster's independent buttons let you work finger flexion in a way that differs from closing a two-handle gripper. Select the exact tension and follow its instructions; do not multiply a per-finger rating and present it as an equivalent Captains of Crush load.
Expand-Your-Hand Bands resist opening the hand. Their five progressive levels provide a repeatable within-product choice without an established equivalent pound rating. They can add a different movement to the week; they are not a treatment promise for elbow, wrist or hand conditions.
Start with one or two nonconsecutive sessions per week and count the gripping already present in rows, carries, deadlifts and pull-ups. This is sample programming, not an instruction to perform every task to failure every day. Stop for pain, tingling or loss of control.
Complete cost: choose one useful tool first
A Guide plus the ten-band extension set totals $49.90 before delivery and tax. Adding more fixed gripper strengths increases cost each time; an adjustable product can reduce the number of devices but still needs a fit and resistance-method check. Hub plus loading hardware is a separate basket. Owned carries need no new tool.
The IronMind pages displayed these orderable items at the source check; marketplace stock and seller authenticity require a fresh check. A useful buying decision starts with the grip task that limits your training, not the highest number printed on the package.
