Deadlift Jacks: Mini vs Full-Size vs Wedges

A mini deadlift jack is the practical choice for occasional plate changes and limited storage; a full jack suits frequent changes on a conventional straight bar. A wedge is smaller and simpler, but you must retain a suitable plate on the bar and follow the wedge’s loading instructions. Verify contact geometry before using any jack on a trap bar, axle or other specialty bar.

Comparisons are based on manufacturer specifications and published product information checked October 22, 2026. We have not conducted hands-on testing. Recommendations are editorial judgments about fit and use. Prices are dated US equipment examples; tax, delivery, installation and extras can change the total.

Deadlift barbell jack buying comparison
Design / example Checked specification Why choose it Main limitation
Titan Mini Bar Jack, 430018; $54.97 18 L × 4 W × 10 H in; 13 lb; 2.25 × 2.25 in cup; UHMW lining; 600 lb manufacturer rating. Compact storage and one-end-at-a-time plate changes. Overall jack height does not establish exact lifted shaft height; no universal specialty-bar fit.
Titan Full Bar Jack, 430017; $129.97 42.5 in wide × 18 in deep; 35 in handle; 30 lb; listed lifted bar height 10 in; UHMW cups; 2,000 lb manufacturer rating. Frequent two-end plate changes on a compatible straight bar. More floor and handle-sweep space; cup spacing/contact and load distribution still matter.
Plate wedge / ramp A plate rolls onto a shaped support instead of levering the shaft. Small accessory bag, minimal equipment storage. Requires a suitable plate already on the bar; cannot assume it supports an otherwise empty bar or every plate diameter.

What the jack actually needs to lift

The goal is to raise the plate edge enough to slide plates on and off freely while the bar remains stable. A tall-looking lever is not necessarily a high-lift jack. The relevant measurement is the supported bar axis above the floor, accounting for the plate’s actual diameter, the floor, and support deflection.

Geometric clearance example

Plate-to-floor gap = supported bar-axis height − plate radius

A 450 mm plate has a radius of 8.86 in. If the bar axis is truly held 10 in above the same floor, the nominal gap is 1.14 in. Titan labels the full jack’s lifted bar height as 10 in but does not define the measurement datum in that table; confirm the actual axis height rather than treating 1.14 in as a tested clearance guarantee.

The mini’s 10 in overall height cannot be substituted for bar-axis height. Thick mats, a platform edge, unusual plates and a different cup contact point can all change the result.

Protect the bar and check the contact

Both Titan jacks list UHMW-lined cups. Inspect that lining for grit, damage and exposed fasteners; position the bar as the manual directs. A protected cup still needs to match the bar’s diameter and support location. Do not lift by a rotating sleeve, end cap or angled frame section unless the maker explicitly allows it.

A mini cup measuring 2.25 inches across is not proof a 49 mm axle is approved: the contact shape, leverage, lateral retention and load position also matter. Likewise, a full jack designed around a straight shaft may not support a hex frame or open trap bar. Obtain exact confirmation for a specialty configuration. Our axle bar guide separates shaft diameter from ordinary barbell dimensions.

The mini’s 600 lb and full jack’s 2,000 lb ratings are different manufacturer limits, not a common laboratory comparison. Do not double a one-jack rating simply because you own two. Follow the prescribed support arrangement, and never place hands or feet under a suspended plate stack.

Storage and operation in a garage gym

Mark the full jack’s 42.5 × 18 in body on the floor, then allow the 35-inch handle to sweep through its operating arc. The stored rectangle does not describe all the space your hands and lever need. Confirm the device will not contact the bar’s plates, a bench, rack feet or the edge of a raised platform.

The mini’s narrow 4-inch body is easier to put beside a rack, but its working base needs flat, stable support. Keep the bar controlled while changing one side, and follow the manual’s sequence for lowering and moving the jack. A wedge must not roll or slide out as plates are removed; inspect the exact wedge’s retaining shape and instructions rather than buying solely on a rubber-versus-plastic label.

Complete cost and the purchase decision

Complete cost = jack or wedge + any manufacturer-required support/protection + delivery and tax. There is no loading pin or rack attachment to add for the two Titan jacks. At the checked prices, two separate mini jacks total $109.94 versus $129.97 for the full jack—a $20.03 equipment difference. Two minis do not automatically reproduce the full jack’s approved function or rating.

Choose a mini when storage and occasional changes dominate. Choose the full jack when the bar configuration fits and frequent changes justify the larger tool. Choose a wedge when the exact plate/ramp combination works and portability matters more than unloading the last plate. Skip buying another tool when a safe existing loading method already solves the problem.

Pair the choice with a practical plate storage layout so the next plate is reachable without crossing the lifting lane. For the main bar purchase, see our barbell buying guide.
