Choose a plate tree when you need a freestanding home for a mixed plate set; choose wall storage when you can mount into suitable structure; choose rack pegs only after checking rack and lifting clearance. A horizontal rack keeps plates easy to sort beside a platform but uses more floor length. The useful capacity is the lower of the published load limit and the plates that physically fit.
Comparisons are based on manufacturer specifications and published product information checked October 22, 2026. We have not conducted hands-on testing. Recommendations are editorial judgments about fit and use. Prices are dated US equipment examples; tax, delivery, installation and extras can change the total.

| Design / exact example | Best reason to choose it | Fit and loading constraint | Dated equipment price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tree: REP Bar & Weight Plate Tree | Six chrome horns; two bar tubes; no wall mounting. | 24 × 24 in base; 50 in high; 8 in usable per horn; 850 lb stated capacity. REP says full-size bumpers fit every level. | $179.99 |
| Rolling tree: Titan Portable Plate and Barbell Storage Tree, 401919 | Move storage for room changes; lock casters before loading. | 24.5 × 24.5 in base; 57.625 in high; 8.25 in sleeves; 18.5 in post spacing; 1,000 lb stated total. | $219.97 |
| Wall: PRx 3-Peg Weight Plate Storage | Recover floor area beside a suitable wall stud. | 55.5 H × 3 W × 8.5 D in bare unit; 8 in pegs; plates up to 18 in diameter. PRx lists two 45 lb crumb bumpers per peg / 270 lb total. | $154.99; 4-peg $179.99 |
| Rack: TITAN Series Weight Plate Holders, 400534, pair | Keep plates close to the bar on a compatible TITAN rack. | 11.25 in loadable length; 50 mm sleeves; 330 lb per peg; bolt centers 4 in. Hardware included for the specified mount. | $89.97 per pair |
| Floor: REP Horizontal Plate Rack | Sort bumpers in individual slots near the lifting area. | 53 × 15.75 × 11.5 in bare unit; 7 in between dividers; 550 lb total; two bar tubes. | $149.99 |
Bumper-plate clearance: check diameter and thickness separately
A rack can hold enough pounds on paper while failing to accommodate your bumper set. Diameter determines whether adjacent levels overlap; thickness determines how many plates fit on a horn. Measure your largest plate rather than assuming every 45 lb plate has the same outline.
For pegs directly above one another, the center-to-center vertical spacing must exceed the sum of the two plate radii, with clearance to lift and remove them. Two 450 mm plates need more than 450 mm / 17.72 in between peg centers for separation. Titan’s listed 18.5 in spacing leaves about 0.78 in of geometric edge separation for that example. This is a calculation, not a hands-on loading test; check frame and hand access too.
Plate count per peg = usable peg length ÷ actual plate thickness, rounded down
Example: 8 in ÷ 3.5 in = two plates. Three would require 10.5 in. An 11.25 in horn fits three by this simplified geometry, before any required end clearance. Then apply the peg and total load limits; a longer horn is not a higher structural rating.
Do not extend a storage peg’s usable length by letting a plate balance over its end. Keep the manufacturer’s retention and loading instructions. Our bumper-versus-iron guide explains why the same loaded weight can occupy very different sleeve space.
Measure the loaded footprint, not just the base
A 24-inch-square tree base is not the outline of a loaded tree. Horns, plate stacks and barbell sleeves can protrude beyond it. Leave room to stand in front of a peg and pull a large plate completely off without hitting a car, wall, bench or door track. Check the path to the bar, including a loaded bench or rack.
Wall storage also projects into the room: the PRx bare depth is 8.5 in, and full-size plates create an approximately plate-diameter-wide occupied zone around each peg. Its 3-inch mounting spine does not mean a 3-inch-wide loaded system. The optional Weight Wing adds change-plate storage and changes the outline again.
Rack-mounted pegs can obstruct bench travel, squat depth, safeties or plates on a working bar. A TITAN Series label is not approval for a T-3, X-3, REP or arbitrary 3 × 3 upright. Confirm the exact rack, bolt diameter, spacing and manufacturer-approved attachment before purchase. Treat stored plates as storage, not a substitute for required rack anchoring.
Installation and complete cost
Complete cost = storage unit + correct mounting hardware or approved rack attachment + installation + delivery and tax. PRx says mounting hardware is included and specifies single-stud installation; that does not authorize drywall-only mounting or establish suitability for every wall. Follow the current installation instructions for the actual wall construction. Use qualified help where the structure is uncertain.
The $179.99 REP tree is $30 more than the $149.99 horizontal rack, while the $219.97 Titan tree is $39.98 more than REP’s tree. Choose based on access, movement and fit, then price the delivered configuration.
Our selection: start with REP’s tree for a straightforward stationary setup; consider Titan’s tree when casters solve a real room problem. Choose the PRx wall design only after verifying the mounting structure. Choose TITAN rack pegs only for their specified rack. Choose the horizontal rack when a low, long storage lane is easier to access than stacked horns.
Storing bars too? Our barbell storage guide covers the extra ceiling clearance required to remove them from vertical tubes.
