Why band color is a poor buying guide
There is no universal color standard for pull-up bands. A green band from one company may not match a green band from another, and even similarly sized bands can publish different resistance ranges. Product photos also make widths difficult to judge.
Compare the manufacturer’s stated resistance range, loop length, width and thickness. The quoted resistance is normally a range because a band provides more force as it stretches. That also explains why assisted pull-ups feel easiest near the bottom, where the band is stretched most, and harder near the top.
A color chart is useful only within one product line. If you replace one band with another brand, start the selection process again rather than assuming the colors are equivalent.

How to choose the right resistance
1. Start with your strict pull-up capacity
Your unassisted repetition count is more useful than body weight alone. Two people at the same weight can need very different help because of pulling strength, grip, technique and training history.
If you cannot initiate a controlled pull from a dead hang, you may need a heavy band or two smaller bands together. If you can already perform several strict reps, a heavy band will probably remove too much work and encourage a fast rebound from the bottom.
2. Use body weight as a secondary factor
Body weight still changes the amount of assistance required. A heavier athlete with the same relative pulling strength will generally need more absolute assistance. Do not subtract a band’s advertised maximum from your body weight and treat the remainder as an exact lifting load, however. Band force changes throughout the range of motion and depends on how far the loop is stretched.
3. Test for a productive rep range
Attach the band, establish a controlled hang and perform a strict set without kipping. The band is in a useful range when it lets you complete the planned repetitions with consistent positions while still requiring meaningful effort near the top.
- Too heavy: it accelerates you sharply from the bottom, makes the first repetitions effortless or prevents a controlled descent.
- About right: it helps you through the weak lower range but still requires active pulling and a deliberate finish.
- Too light: you cannot complete the intended repetitions without kicking, swinging or losing position.
The goal is not to find one permanent band. It is to find the current level that supports useful training, then reduce assistance as strength improves.

Buy one band when the requirement is already known
A single band can be economical if you have used the same model at a gym and know the exact resistance you need. It also makes sense as a replacement for a worn band or as the next lighter step in an established progression.
Buy a set when you are choosing remotely
A set is usually the safer online purchase for a beginner. It lets you combine two loops for more help, remove one as you improve and use lighter bands for mobility or accessory work. Multiple resistance levels also accommodate different exercises and users.
The tradeoff is quality dilution: a very inexpensive five-band bundle may prioritize quantity over material consistency, published specifications or warranty support. Compare what is documented, not just the number of colors in the photo.

Pull-up assistance requires a long continuous loop, commonly sold as a power band or pull-up band. Short mini bands designed for hips and legs are not interchangeable. Check the product’s full loop length and intended use before ordering.
Band width
Within a product family, wider bands generally provide more assistance. Width is easy to compare visually, but it is not a universal measure of force across brands. Use it alongside the stated range rather than as a substitute for it.
Material and construction
Product listings may describe layered latex, molded rubber or latex-free synthetic material. The practical buying questions are whether the manufacturer publishes the material, whether the loop is continuous and whether the surface shows clear seams, cuts or irregularities when it arrives.
Latex sensitivity is an obvious reason to choose a product explicitly identified as latex-free. Do not assume a fabric-covered lower-body band is suitable for pull-up assistance; confirm that the product is designed to be stretched over a pull-up bar.
Foot, knee or assistance strap?
Placing a foot in the loop stretches the band farther than using a bent knee, so it usually produces more assistance from the same band. It can also make entry and exit less convenient on a high bar. A knee position shortens the stretch and may feel easier to manage, but it provides less help.
An assistance-strap system uses a separate foot or knee cradle connected to elastic components. It may simplify mounting for some users, although it costs more and introduces additional attachment points.
Whichever setup you choose, follow the product instructions, secure the loop before loading it and keep your face out of the band’s recoil path during setup. Inspect the band before every session and retire it if you find cuts, cracks, severe thinning, tackiness or damage near the attachment point.
