The KNKG CORE and PLUS Duffels solve different packing problems. Choose the CORE when an external lifting-belt attachment and lower empty weight matter most. Choose the PLUS when you need larger shoe storage, more exterior organization, or room for two pairs of shoes in the 45L and 63L sizes.

Choose CORE for an awkward lifting belt
The CORE’s defining feature is its external belt attachment. A thick lever or prong belt consumes a disproportionate amount of space inside a normal duffel because it resists folding. Moving it outside leaves the main compartment open for shoes, sleeves, wraps, chalk and clothes.
Measure the belt before ordering. KNKG lists the CORE 35L attachment for belts up to roughly 6.3 inches wide and 45.7 inches long, and the CORE 51L for belts up to roughly 6.7 inches wide and 51.5 inches long. Include the lever or buckle in the measurement. An unusually wide or long belt should not be assumed to fit merely because it is a lifting belt.
Owner discussions also identify a small tradeoff: hook-and-loop material or hardware at the attachment can rub some leather belts. If cosmetic wear matters, inspect the contact points and consider placing a soft barrier between the belt and any abrasive surface.
Choose PLUS for large shoes or two-pair separation
The PLUS prioritizes shoe capacity. The 33L is listed for one pair up to men’s size 15, while the 45L and 63L are designed for two pairs and can accommodate large boots. That makes the PLUS more logical for athletes who carry lifters plus training shoes, wear large footwear, or separate dirty gear from clean clothing.
The limitation is physical, not theoretical: an internal shoe compartment occupies space inside the bag when filled. Independent owner reviews frequently praise the separation but note that loading shoes can become less convenient when the main compartment is already packed. Buy the larger size only if the extra gear is routine, not because maximum capacity sounds safer.
CORE 35L vs PLUS 45L
This is the most useful head-to-head comparison because both are intended as full-size daily gym bags.
CORE 35L: best for most belt-carrying lifters
- Dimensions: 17.7 × 11 × 11 inches
- Weight: 1.8 pounds
- Shoe storage: stated up to size 10
- Laptop sleeve: up to 13 inches
- Best loadout: belt, one pair of shoes, sleeves, wraps, bottle and change of clothes
The CORE 35L is ten liters smaller and about 1.5 pounds lighter than the PLUS 45L. Its external belt storage creates useful space without forcing a larger overall bag. The weak point is shoe size: athletes above the stated size-10 limit should move to the CORE 51L or a PLUS model.
PLUS 45L: best for two pairs of shoes and competition gear
- Dimensions: 19.7 × 11.8 × 11.8 inches
- Weight: 3.3 pounds
- Shoe storage: two pairs, including very large footwear
- Best loadout: lifters, trainers, belt, sleeves, food, extra clothes and small accessories
The PLUS 45L is the better mobile locker. It provides substantially more capacity, tougher 1000D body material and more external organization. It is also heavier before any equipment is packed. If you carry only one pair of shoes and a few accessories, much of that extra size becomes unused bulk.
Which KNKG size should you buy?
15L: essentials only
Choose a 15L model for a compact daily loadout: small shoes or no shoe storage, wrist wraps, grips, a bottle and a light change of clothes. The CORE 15L is not recommended by KNKG for normal shoe storage. This size is intentionally small, not a compressed version of the larger bags.
CORE 35L or PLUS 33L: the daily sweet spot
These are the best starting points for one-person daily gym use. Pick the CORE 35L if a lifting belt is the most awkward item. Pick the PLUS 33L if large shoes and pocket organization matter more. The PLUS 33L is almost the same external width as the CORE 35L but weighs about one pound more because of its heavier material and compartment layout.
CORE 51L or PLUS 45L: large daily or competition loadout
The CORE 51L suits lifters with a belt, size-13 shoes and more clothing. The PLUS 45L suits athletes carrying two shoe pairs, substantial nutrition or recovery gear, and many smaller accessories. These sizes can also work for short travel, but airline limits vary; compare the fully packed dimensions with the carrier’s current rules instead of treating any gym bag as automatically carry-on compliant.
PLUS 63L: specialty capacity
The 63L model is appropriate when the bag replaces a locker, supports coaching or competition equipment, or carries bulky combat-sport gear. It is usually excessive for an ordinary workout. A half-empty 63L duffel still occupies the space of a 63L duffel.
Material and durability differences
The CORE uses a lighter 500D nylon body with PVC backing, while the PLUS uses 1000D nylon with Hypalon trim. Both use ripstop lining, YKK zippers and steel hardware. Denier alone does not prove lifespan, but it explains part of the weight difference: the PLUS sacrifices lightness for a heavier exterior and a more compartmented build.
Both current product families list a 25-year defect warranty. That is not the same as unconditional coverage for normal abrasion, misuse, odor or cosmetic wear. Keep the receipt and verify current exclusions before relying on the warranty as a purchase guarantee.
What owner feedback changes the decision?
- CORE 35L is often enough: owners repeatedly describe it as large enough for a normal lifting loadout without becoming cumbersome.
- Belt storage is genuinely differentiating: it frees the interior, but contact points deserve attention with premium leather belts.
- PLUS organization can be excessive: athletes who like assigned pockets tend to value it; minimal packers may not.
- Shoe compartments consume interior volume: the rated capacity does not mean every liter remains available after shoes are loaded.
- Locker fit matters: flexible duffels can compress, but 45L and larger bags may still be awkward in shallow lockers.
Our selection
Buy the CORE 35L if you carry a lifting belt, wear shoes within its stated limit, and want the lightest full-size choice. It has the clearest functional advantage for strength athletes and avoids paying for pockets you may not use.
Buy the PLUS 33L if you wear large shoes, prefer more external organization, and carry one pair. Buy the PLUS 45L only when two-pair shoe storage or a competition-sized loadout is a recurring need.
Compare KNKG CORE listings Compare KNKG PLUS listingsFrequently asked questions
Is King Kong the same brand as KNKG?
Yes. Current products use the KNKG branding. Older products and listings commonly use King Kong or King Kong Apparel. WOD Fever’s Original King Kong Bag 3.0 archive documents a prior-generation design, so do not assume its specifications match the current CORE or PLUS.
Is the CORE 35L or PLUS 33L bigger?
The CORE has slightly more stated volume at 35L versus 33L, but useful capacity depends on what occupies the compartments. The PLUS is heavier and gives more priority to shoe and pocket organization; the CORE prioritizes belt storage and a more open interior.
Will a lever belt fit the CORE attachment?
It can, but measure the belt at its widest and longest points, including the lever. Compare those numbers with the current model specification before buying.
Which bag is better for functional fitness competitions?
The PLUS 45L is better when you need lifters, trainers, food, clothes and recovery gear in one bag. The CORE 35L is better when the belt is the primary bulky item and you want a lighter bag between events.
What else belongs in the bag?
For palm protection, use our gymnastics grip selection guide. If knee support is part of the loadout, compare 5mm versus 7mm knee sleeves before buying the thickest option by default.
