Choose a handled workout sandbag for rows, presses and varied grips; choose a handle-free cylindrical bag for bear-hug carries and shouldering; choose a stone-shaped bag when stone-style handling is the goal. Then buy the size that suits your intended filled load. A headline maximum is not always the recommended everyday fill.
Comparisons are based on manufacturer specifications and published product information. The hero is a generated illustration of bag categories, not a photo of the exact recommended products.

Best workout sandbags by handling style
See the grip before you choose the load
Handle placement changes how you pick up and move the bag. These manufacturer photos show the actual designs; the exercise matches below are editorial guidance.

REP handled training bag
Multiple grip orientations suit rows, presses and suitcase-style carries. Choose this style when changing hand position is part of the workout.

GORUCK Simple Training
Two parallel grips keep the setup simple for two-handed lifts and carries. It offers fewer hand positions than a seven-handle training bag.

Rogue Strongman cylinder
Grip around the bag for bear-hug carries and lap-to-shoulder work. The top closure flap is not a lifting handle.

REP Stone Sandbags 2.0
Wrap your arms around the body for stone-style pickups and loading. Select the intended designated weight; do not assume a large shell works well half filled.
Photo key: REP Medium 25–75 lb; GORUCK Simple 80 lb; Rogue product family; REP Stone 2.0 100 lb. Photos are not to a common scale, and handle count includes grips hidden by the camera angle. Sources: REP handled bags, GORUCK Simple, Rogue Strongman and REP Stone 2.0, checked October 19, 2026.
| Product / best use | Handles, load and size | Filler / purchase tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| REP handled Sandbags — mixed movements | Seven handles; Small 5–25 lb, Medium 25–75, Large 50–125, XL 125–200. REP states 20 in length for Small and 36 in for XL; intermediate dimensions were not published in the inspected spec table. | Shell and removable filler bags included; sand extra. Respect the separate ideal-fill guidance below. |
| GORUCK Simple Training Sandbag — simple two-handle work | Two padded handles. Listed 20/30/40/60/80/100 lb sizes; dimensions: 23×8 / 23×10 / 23×12 / 28×13 / 34×14 / 38×14 in (L×W as published). | Single streamlined bag design with triple hook-and-loop filler closure; no sand. Fewer grip orientations than seven-handle REP. |
| Rogue Strongman Sandbag — handle-free cylindrical carries | No lifting handles; 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 400 lb approximate maximum sizes. The 100 lb model: 16 in diameter × 7.5 in tall. | Built-in filler bag, zipper and hook-and-loop outer closure. Not a slambag; filler extra. |
| REP Stone Sandbags 2.0 — stone-style loading | No handles; 50/75/100/150/200/250 lb variants. The 100 lb model’s listed dimensions are 15×10.8 in. | Built-in double-lined filler; sand extra. REP recommends filling to the designated weight, not buying a huge shell to underfill. |
| Yes4All handled bag — Amazon comparison candidate | Manufacturer lists S 5–25, M 25–75, L 50–125, XL 125–200 lb. Check exact selected shell and handle arrangement. | Manufacturer links to Amazon; current Amazon price, stock, dimensions, included fillers and warranty were not independently verified. Not ranked as a verified lowest-price pick. |
Handle layout changes the exercise. A long bag with several grip positions can support rows, presses and suitcase-style carries. A handle-free cylinder must be gripped around the body of the bag. A round stone bag asks for a different lap and pickup. None automatically duplicates the shape and shoulder position of the HYROX lunge bag.
Choose the working fill, not just maximum capacity
REP’s handled-bag guidance recommends 70–80% of maximum capacity for its ideal working fill and says individual filler bags should stay at or below three-quarters full. The ranges below are editorial calculations, not additional manufacturer weight ratings.
| REP handled size | Published fill range | Calculated ideal band | Included removable fillers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small — $44.99 | 5–25 lb | 17.5–20 lb | One medium filler |
| Medium — $59.99 | 25–75 lb | 52.5–60 lb | One medium + one large |
| Large — $69.99 | 50–125 lb | 87.5–100 lb | Three large |
| XL — $89.99 | 125–200 lb | 140–160 lb | Four large |
Black variants were available in the checked US variant data; other colors differ. A load inside the published range may still sit outside the ideal band. Do not use the calculated band to override the three-quarter filler limit.
REP’s Stone 2.0 guidance is different: select the designated weight you intend to use. Its FAQ warns that both underfilling and overfilling can cause seam stress. The US 50 lb variant is also labeled “25 kg,” which is not an exact conversion; use a scale and confirm the intended unit with REP instead of treating the label as precision calibration.

Manufacturer-listed size: 15 × 10.8 in · no handles
Do not transfer filler advice between brands. GORUCK says its labeled weights were developed with hardware-store all-purpose sand and does not recommend pebbles, gravel or finer play sand for its Simple bags. Freedom Strength recommends dry play sand for its own bags. Different materials change both density and behavior; “100 lb capacity” is not a universal volume-to-weight conversion.
Complete cost to reach the training load
For a self-fill bag, budget shell + required liners not included + enough approved dry filler + shipping/tax. Add a scale only if you do not already have a suitable one. Empty shell weight counts toward the final training load: weigh the completed bag rather than pouring in the target number of pounds of sand.
| Example purchase | Dated shell price / filling requirement | Complete-cost equation |
|---|---|---|
| 20 lb handled setup: REP Small | $44.99; included liner; one 50 lb sack provides enough filler | $44.99 + S + shipping/tax |
| 60 lb handled setup: REP Medium | $59.99; included liners; two 50 lb sacks provide enough filler | $59.99 + 2S + shipping/tax |
| 100 lb handled setup: REP Large | $69.99; included liners; two 50 lb sacks provide enough filler | $69.99 + 2S + shipping/tax |
| 100 lb stone setup: REP Stone 2.0 | $69.99; integrated liner; two 50 lb sacks provide enough filler | $69.99 + 2S + shipping/tax |
| 100 lb cylindrical setup: Rogue Strongman | $100.00; integrated filler; two 50 lb sacks provide enough approved filler | $100.00 + 2S + shipping/tax |
S is your actual local price for one 50 lb sack of the product-approved filler. At a hypothetical S = $8, the five subtotals are $52.99, $75.99, $85.99, $85.99 and $116.00 before shipping/tax. The $8 input is an illustration, not a verified local price. Surplus filler remains after weighing; liners and shell contribute to the finished load. Do not force the last sand into a full liner to hit a number.
These are usable-load comparisons, not a claim that a 100 lb handled bag and 100 lb stone bag produce the same exercise. REP lists free shipping subject to its policy; Rogue freight depends on the basket and destination. A lower shell price can disappear after delivery or a missing liner.

Closures, care and restrictions matter more than fabric hype
| Model | Closure and use restrictions | Care / warranty evidence |
|---|---|---|
| REP handled | Removable hook-and-loop fillers inside a zippered shell; do not fill the shell directly, slam or drag. | Water-resistant does not mean waterproof. Dry before storage; REP lists one-year sandbag coverage, excluding normal wear and negligent use/storage. |
| REP Stone 2.0 | Built-in double liner, tightly rolled hook-and-loop closure, outer zipper and covering tabs. | Store cool and dry; abrasive concrete affects life. Its marketing permits rougher use, but that does not apply to REP handled bags or prove tested durability. One-year sandbag warranty exclusions still apply. |
| GORUCK Simple | Triple hook-and-loop closure; explicitly not built as a slambag. | Manufacturer offers Scars Lifetime Guarantee; check its current terms. Empty/dry before storage and follow product cleaning guidance. |
| Rogue Strongman | Integrated filler, zipper and hook-and-loop closure; zipper flap is not a carrying handle. Not for slams. | Rogue recommends rubber/nonabrasive surfaces. Flap-pulling damage is excluded from warranty; confirm current coverage before ordering. |
| Yes4All Amazon candidate | Confirm the exact listing’s closure and included liners. | Care, restrictions and warranty not verified for the selected listing; do not assume another bag’s rules apply. |
Inspect stitching, handles and closure engagement before loading. Do not clean away a visible defect and assume the bag is fit to lift. Material denier and seam descriptions are manufacturer construction specifications; they are not comparable durability tests.
Which bag earns a place in your home gym?
- One versatile handled bag: use the REP size table to match your current load and grips. Buying the largest shell is not automatically economical.
- Simple two-handle movements: compare GORUCK’s layout and guarantee against its delivered price. Do not treat fewer handles as automatically worse.
- Heavy bear-hug carries: a handle-free cylinder such as Rogue’s Strongman line serves a different task from a handled training bag.
- Stone-style handling: choose the correctly filled REP Stone 2.0 model; avoid an oversized underfilled shell.
- Lowest delivered price: compare the exact Amazon variant only when the missing listing details are confirmed.
Buying for HYROX? Start with your actual division and planned shoulder position, then use the 12-week training plan to place the equipment in a session. A bag does not replace training access to the race sled and surface. See the sled surface, space and complete-cost guide if that is your next purchase.
