Can you mix competition and training plates?
Yes, provided they use compatible Olympic sleeves and the bar is loaded symmetrically. Mixing can be sensible: a pair of thin competition-style 20kg or 45-pound plates can preserve sleeve space, while training plates fill out the rest of the set.
Be aware that different diameters, thicknesses and bounce characteristics share impact unevenly. Full-size bumpers should carry the contact, and the same plate arrangement should appear on both sides of the bar. Do not mix plates in a way that violates the manufacturer's dropping instructions.
