For HYROX preparation, choose the Concept2 RowErg when matching the race machine is the priority. For general home conditioning, compare it with Rogue Echo’s folding air-rower design, Hydrow Wave’s guided magnetic training, and the WaterRower Original Club’s water resistance. The right rower depends on workout requirements, operating room and the functions you will actually use.

Best home rowing machines by training requirement

Current named models and manufacturer evidence
Requirement / model Resistance and display Space and storage What can rule it out
HYROX preparation / Concept2 RowErg Air flywheel, chain drive, PM5; Bluetooth/ANT+ and ErgData 96 × 24in machine; about 9 × 4ft recommended for use; separates without tools Fan noise or a requirement for a built-in streaming screen
Home intervals / Rogue Echo Rower Air flywheel, nickel-plated chain; 4.7in LCD with Bluetooth/ANT+ 99 × 26in; folds to a listed 38 × 26in footprint; confirm folded height A race or leaderboard requiring another exact machine; do not assume metric equivalence
Guided sessions / Hydrow Wave Electromagnetic resistance, 16in display 80 × 19 × 43in; 102lb; upright storage requires the specified Vertical Anchor Power/internet needs and the membership cost for the complete guided experience
Water resistance / WaterRower Original Club Water tank and S4 Bluetooth monitor on the current Club listing 82.25 × 22.25 × 20in in use; listed stored height 82.25in Tank care, low seat or non-equivalent event metrics; exact finish/rail/monitor variant matters

Which rower should you buy?

Concept2 RowErg: event-specific practice and repeatable training

Its PM5 provides pace, watts, stroke rate and interval programming without requiring a paid coaching subscription for those core functions. Concept2 identifies its ergs as official HYROX equipment. Choose the RowErg when matching the race’s rowing platform matters. For CrossFit, confirm the particular competition’s equipment and scoring requirements.

The product-specific listing was available from Concept2, Inc. when checked. Match the seat-height/leg configuration, seller and delivered price. Concept2’s US direct listing showed a $990 standard-leg price; prices and availability can change.

Rogue Echo: folding air rower for home intervals

The Echo uses a nickel-plated chain, not a belt. Its 99 × 26in footprint is slightly larger than the RowErg’s published machine envelope, while its listed folded footprint is 38 × 26in. Rogue publishes five-year frame and two-year moving-parts/monitor warranty coverage, subject to its terms. Choose it for your home setup and preferred monitor workflow; do not assume another machine’s calories or leaderboard records transfer directly. Check Rogue’s current specification and firmware details.

Hydrow Wave: guided magnetic training with a service commitment

Hydrow’s FAQ lists a 16in display and an 80 × 19 × 43in machine. The current membership page lists $50 per month for the complete household experience. Hydrow states that its screens and workouts, including basic Just Row mode, need internet. Core use without a membership and the full content experience are different questions; verify both before ordering.

Upright storage is not simply “lean it against a wall”: Hydrow specifies its Wave Vertical Anchor. The FAQ gives an approximately 82in-high stored configuration. Review the exact Wave storage, warranty and power requirements.

WaterRower Original Club: water resistance with variant-specific details

The current Club listing identifies S4 Bluetooth and an in-use size of 82.25 × 22.25 × 20in. Stored upright, it lists 82.25in height; plan the moving mass, tank and ceiling. Its page displays differing user-weight summaries, so confirm the applicable limit directly if that affects your purchase. Do not combine figures from XL rails, another wood finish or an older non-Bluetooth monitor.

Choose water resistance because you prefer that training format and can follow the tank-maintenance instructions. We have not measured its noise level or established that its pace/calorie readings match an air rower. Check the current Club package and support terms.

Concept2 RowErg with 96-by-24-inch frame and recommended rowing space
Concept2 lists the RowErg at 96 × 24in and recommends approximately 9 × 4ft for use. The operating area exceeds the machine footprint. Allow the user’s full stroke, access and the specified storage procedure. Published specifications; overlay positions are illustrative. Sources: Concept2 RowErg.

Air, magnetic and water: compare the training task

Air resistance rises as you pull harder. A damper setting changes airflow; it is not a standardized weight level. Concept2’s drag-factor measurement accounts for airflow differences more usefully than copying the lever number. Magnetic systems use a different resistance mechanism; water systems add tank and paddle behavior. A shared 500m split label does not independently establish cross-brand calibration.

For mixed-modal workouts, check interval setup, display readability, rapid foot-strap changes and export of the data you need. For general conditioning, a rower you will use consistently can be appropriate without matching a race machine. Our air versus magnetic comparison explains the mechanism tradeoffs, and air bike versus rower covers the broader conditioning choice.

Three-year ownership cost

Compare machine + shipping/assembly + mat + software needed for your intended features + maintenance and replacement parts. At the currently listed $50/month rate, 36 months of Hydrow membership adds $1,800 before tax, future price changes or prepaid/bundle terms. That is additional to the machine. A connected screen can justify its cost if the content drives use, but it should appear in the budget.

For Concept2, follow the model-specific chain, rail and inspection schedule. For Echo, check Rogue’s current manual and firmware. For WaterRower, include tank care; for Hydrow, include power, internet and specified storage hardware. A manufacturer’s warranty is not an independent durability test.

Buying questions

Which rowing machine is best for HYROX?

The Concept2 RowErg is the most directly matched choice when practicing on the race machine is your requirement. Verify the current event format and setup instructions.

Which is quietest?

We have not conducted a standardized sound test. Magnetic resistance avoids an air fan’s roar, but seat rollers, floor transmission and technique still make noise. Do not treat “quiet” as a measured decibel rating.

Will a rower fit a tall household?

Check usable rail travel, inseam guidance, catch position, footplate adjustment and seat height. Maximum user weight alone does not establish legroom. Include the tallest user’s full stroke in your room check.
