Best Gymnastic Rings: Grip Size, Straps & Complete Cost

Athlete training on wooden REP rings in a bright gym; manufacturer photograph

The best gymnastic rings are the pair that fits your grip and reaches every exercise height in your actual setup. For a first indoor set, start with REP’s standard wooden rings and numbered straps. Choose the slimmer 1.11-inch grip if wrapping your hand around a thick handle is difficult; choose 1.25 inches if you prefer a fuller grip. Upgrade the straps for repeatable adjustments only after checking their shortest usable setting.

Best ring sets by buying decision

Choose this Best fit What changes the decision?
REP 1.11-inch rings + 7.5-foot straps
$39.99
Smaller hands or a preference for a slimmer grip Two rings and standard straps are included. Check short-strap reach carefully; REP’s FAQ and variant label conflict.
REP 1.25-inch rings + 7.5-foot straps
$39.99
General home training with a thicker grip preference Same price as the slimmer set. A thicker ring is not automatically better for beginners.
REP 1.25-inch rings + 14-foot straps
$44.99
A higher support or lower ring position requiring more strap 14 feet is the flat strap length, not 14 feet of hanging drop. Manage the extra tail.

An Amazon alternative with numbered cam-buckle straps Verified listing: 32 mm birch rings, two 14.76-foot straps, strap retainers and two rolls of hand tape. Select the exact variant; the parent title also mentions other configurations.

Our default: buy the standard REP set if it reaches your required positions. Pay for the Competition system when its adjustment method solves a real nuisance. The PACEARTH listing is a useful delivered-price comparison, but its featured price was hidden behind an add-to-cart prompt during our check; we have not treated another seller’s or another variant’s price as its price.

28 mm vs. 32 mm: measure the part you hold

These figures describe the thickness of the grip, not the diameter of the whole ring. REP labels its options 1.11 and 1.25 inches: about 28.2 and 31.8 mm using 25.4 mm per inch. Retailers commonly group these as 28 mm and 32 mm.

REP recommends its slimmer grip for smaller hands and its thicker grip for larger hands and cross-training. Treat that as a starting point. If possible, try both for rows, a controlled hang and an assisted support. A grip that feels comfortable in a row may feel different supporting your body above the rings. There is no universal hand-size cutoff or beginner diameter.

Both standard REP sizes use Baltic birch. Wood is a sensible indoor choice when you prefer its feel, but a material label does not establish durability or authorize permanent outdoor exposure. If you need equipment that stays outside, obtain explicit weather and storage instructions for both rings and straps before choosing.

Strap length is not hanging height

Measure from the intended support to the lowest ring position you need, then check the manufacturer’s installed range for the exact routing. Rows and low push-ups can need more drop than pull-ups. Dips need space above the rings as well as below them. Check headroom, body travel and the route into and out of the exercise.

Two systems, two different length conventions.

Standard REP straps are sold as 7.5 or 14 feet end to end. The same page’s FAQ calls the short version “7 feet” and gives 3.5 feet of usable length; it gives 7 feet usable for the 14-foot version. Because of that discrepancy, confirm short-set reach with REP if your fit is close. Do not assume 7.5 feet of vertical drop.

Competition straps use a different loop-and-carabiner arrangement. REP publishes a 49-inch minimum for the 7-foot option and a 90.5-inch minimum for the 14-foot option, with maximums of 7 and 14 feet “with rings.” Follow its illustrated installation options; these are not interchangeable with the standard straps’ flat-length measurements.

Check the support before ordering a mount

A ring or strap rating does not rate the ceiling, rack, bar, fasteners or installation. REP’s Competition manual calls for a structurally sound bar or rig and specifies bodyweight exercises only, with a 600 lb maximum. Do not read that number as permission to add external weight or assume a doorway bar supports hanging rings. Use the support maker’s approved loading and installation requirements.

Do not improvise ceiling fixings from a ring-set listing. If the structure is uncertain, establish a suitable support and its actual installation cost first. Inspect mounting and straps before use; REP’s manual says not to use frayed or excessively worn straps.

REP component prices above were available at the time checked, including a sale on the Competition ring pair. Its builder also displayed a generic $69.98 starting figure; the $61.48 subtotal is our sum of the two exact component prices, not a guaranteed builder or checkout price. Recheck the selected basket before paying.

If you already own a suitable support: compare the delivered ring-and-strap subtotal. If you do not: add the approved support, correct installation hardware and any required installation labor. A universal ceiling-mount allowance would hide the most important unknown in the purchase.

Care, warranty and what to confirm

The standard REP ring pages state a one-year warranty. Do not assume that automatically defines the separate Competition components’ coverage. Confirm component-specific terms and outdoor care if those affect the purchase. The Competition manual requires regular checks for strap wear. PACEARTH describes its supplied hand tape as consumable; replacement frequency depends on use.

Put the right rings into your training

Once the setup fits, choose exercises you can control. Rings add an unstable support task, so parallel-bar dip performance does not establish ring-dip readiness. Our bodyweight WOD collection includes ring movements alongside workouts that need no rings; keep its exercise scaling separate from the equipment decision.
